Type of Adaptation to Prison Conditions Employed by Inmates Depending on the Length of Stay in a Penal Institution

Abstract

The stay in prison determines behaviour of inmates due to specific conditions. Therefore it can be asked whether specific adaptive behaviours appear because of the stay in the penitentiary environment. Two groups of men were examined. In this research, the sample size was 102 people, who were convicted for the first time and received sentences up to 25 years of incarceration. The time in prison was presented on a timeline and correlated with the frequency of choosing five types of adaptations (according to Goffman’s concept). The stay in prison, apart from other factors, will cause the use of individual adaptive strategies in a few or over a dozen percent. Studies have shown that inmates start their stay in a prison with withdrawal, and only with the passage of time their functioning changes and they start to reach for other adaptive techniques. Therefore, attention should be paid to this fact due to the social rehabilitation.
