Perception of Social Support and Psychological WellBeing of Parents of Children with Autism – the Mediating Role of Coping Style

Abstract

Parents of children with autism experience many difficulties related to the care and upbringing of their chilren on a daily basis. As shown by numerous studies, they experience high stress and their well-being is reduced. The subject of the study was the relationship between the perception of support, coping and well-being. In this relationship, it was checked whether the styles of coping with stress are a mediator between the perception of support and psychological well-being. The study involved 217 parents of children with autism. The results showed that the mediating role in the analyzed system is played by the style of coping with stress focused on the task and on emotions. A higher level of social support increases concentration on the task and reduces the tendency to excessively focus on one’s own emotions, thus resulting into higher well-being. The results allowed for a better understanding of the relationship between social support and well-being, showing that it is not just a simple relationship. Support could effectively improve the quality of life of parents if it affects their more adaptive coping with the stress they experience. The research may be a starting point for further considerations on the well-being of parents of children with autism and its determinants. This may be the basis for providing more effective help to this group.
