I pay special attention to factors that play an important role in the decision making process of the probation officer during diagnostic activities. I would also like to draw attention to the importance of the probation officer’s understanding of the client’s behavior and the need to take into account the context of the occurring symptoms of social maladjustment, as this is the basis for preparing appropriate plans to stop a juveniles from committing antisocial acts (Hejne 1982). The purpose of this article is also to illustrate the variety and diversity of knowledge that family court probation officers should possess in order for the diagnosis to be objective. The probation officer’s knowledge comes from both personal and professional sources. What influences the manifested style of the probation officer’s work are his previous life experiences, as well as what he or she learned at work, i.e. practical, empirical and theoretical knowledge, professional ethics as well as established work standards. It is impossible to discuss in one article all the factors determining the functioning of clients of probation officers, therefore only selected aspects of knowledge that are relevant for taking diagnostic activities by a probation officers will be presented in the article.
